Elephant Seals - San Simeon 2005 : The Elephant Seals come to this stretch of beach above San Simeon on California's Central Coast each year to give birth, nurse their young for a month, get pregnant, and then go out to sea and start the cycle all over again. This cycle starts in late fall and by late spring the beach is nearly empty. It seems that there may always be some seals in this area as we have seen them in the soummer, but the winter months are the best time. These pictures were taken on Dec 28-29, 2005. The pictures were taken with a Canon 20D, most with my new 70-200mm, f2.8 L IS lens. Notice the sharpness of the detail.

Carrizo Plain National Monument : The Carrizo Plain National Monument is located between Santa Maria and Bakersfield California, off of CA Route 166. There is more information at the monument web site http://www.ca.blm.gov/bakersfield/carrizoplain.html The first nine images were taken at Carrizo Plain. While there we learned about another location, which is off of Shell Creek Road, just north of CA Rte 58 in SLO County. We returned home by that route and the remainder of the shots are from that location.

Santa Ynez River and Nojoqui Park : Southern California has experienced a rainy winter after five dry years. The local rivers, creeks, and falls are running at full bore. March 6th, 2005 was a beautiful Sunday after a gray week, so I went up to shoot the Santa Ynez River at Buellton and Nojoqui Falls County Park. All photos © 2005 Terry Straehley

Lotusland : Our camera club took a field trip to Lotusland. Lotusland is a private estate in the Santa Barbara area. As it is located in a residential area the number of visitors is strictly limited and reservations must be made in advance. For more information about Lotusland, go to their web site www.lotusland.org.
As the lotuses are out in pools, the pictures of individual flowers and the dragon flies were taken with my Canon 70 - 200 f2.8 L IS. The three pictures of the grounds were made with my Canon 17-40 f/4 L.
